March Story Contest Winners

"Miss Maggie's Love"
Story sent in by BirdToyNutZ

A Meyers named Miss Maggie Magpie. I call her that because it's cute. I call her Maggie or Miss Maggie, for short. She is 3 years old now. And from day one, we've had a very special bond. In January of 2004, I was looking for a Parrotlet for my son. He was very afraid of our Amazon and she took full advantage of it, every chance she got. So we all agreed, since we wanted another bird, we would look for a small one my son would not be afraid of. He fell in love with Parrotlets at the Vet's office, when we took our Amazon for her well-bird check up. Well, I was looking at these adorable Parrotlets, when this crazy grey and green bird kept clicking to me. She'd get as close to me as she could by squishing herself up against the cage bars. I asked the breeder about her and she told me that the bird is a Meyers Parrot. Only a few months old. I though, how cute. So I opened the cage just to scritch her and she scrambled out onto my arm, looking up at me trying to feed me. Then took one look at my hubby and knocked on me, telling him I was now hers. LOL. We had a trip to go on, so I paid for her (obviously) and asked the breeder to hold her until we got back. We went on our trip, came back, and the rest is history. We got a little Meyers parrot. Forward it to August 2004. I got the call no one ever wants to get. It was my Mom. She has Bi-polar and she treats everything like a dire emergency, so when she called, frantic and upset, I didn't get phased myself. I figured it was something small and easy to handle, like usual. I was wrong. She told me to sit down (and can you picture me sighing and wondering?). So I did. Then she told me the news. My Dad had died. He had took his own life. I threw the phone across the room and went crying into my bedroom. Maggie had been out the whole time. Our house isn't big, but for a little 6-7 inch bird, I imagine it's huge. She climbed down from the top of her cage, waddled down the hall and into my bedroom. As I am sobbing, I hear this little robot voice saying "up-up" over and over. She could not make the journey to the top of my bed, but as I peered over, I could see her desperately trying to find a way up. So I picked up her. She's not a big snuggler. She loves her scritches and loves to preen me to pieces, but she's not a snuggle bug. That day she snuggled and sang to me. She preened my tears off and preened my hair. She was soooo comforting, I still cry now, just thinking of how beautiful she was to me. I loved her before that, but I loved her even more after. I love telling this story because it really shows how sentient birds are and how intune with our emotions they are. She knew I was hurting. She wanted to comfort me. She had never gone searching for me before that day and has never done it sense. She is so much more to me, than "just a bird" or "like a kid" to me. She is my world. I love her so much, I got my very first tattoo, last year, and it's her beautiful face.

As most of you know, I only have one foot (which isnt very flexible) and a stump. My mum had just hung a water bowl on the outside of my cage for when for when i am out, so i dont have to struggle getting back in if i am thirsty. I spot this new contraption on my cage from sitting on the wardrobe, and fly down to investigate. I sit on my big wide branch across my cage and start to drink the water, but then I try to be clever and balance on the actual rim of the bowl. Mum says she was quite impressed at how long i managed to balance on the thin rim, and then .....

you all know whats coming....

I went head first into my water dish I wasnt a happy bird after this, i was soaking wet, so i went and sat on the bookshelf and sulked. I was grateful to a warm towel off my mum
